Pultrusion is a manufacturing process of composite materials , which is used to create reinforced polymer products like fiberglass rods, tubes, and structural profiles. Data plays a pivotal role in ensurig the quality, efficiency and reliability of the pultrusion process. The traditional Excel files are prone to errors and data inconsistencies, especially when multiple users are involved.

That's why our client needs a data platform to centralize data management, to automate data collection and reporting and also to have more valuable insights through data visualization and data analyses.

01. Users interview : meet with the professionnals in pultrusion and know their real pain

Pultrusion is a highly technical process and not easy to comprehend for non-professionals. Therefore, the best way to gain a better understanding of this technical process is to engage with technical experts and learn about the pultrusion process and the data required throughout the entire process.

So, I spent an entire day observing the typical routine of the technicians and inquired about the challenges they face when recording data in Excel.

Their typical day involves various tasks related to setting up and maintaining the pultrusion machinery, monitoring the production process, and ensuring product quality. Here's a breakdown of a typical day for a pultrusion technician:

02. Workshop with stakeholders : define the main features for this online solution with pultrusion experts in workshop

In order to create a robust online solution tailored to the specific needs of pultrusion experts working within a workshop environment, it is crucial to define the main features carefully.

This digital platform should be equipped with a comprehensive set of tools and capabilities to support the intricate processes involved in pultrusion.

These features include real-time machine monitoring and control, data analytics for process optimization, quality assurance checkpoints, collaborative tools for team communication and knowledge sharing, and advanced production scheduling. The platform should also encompass inventory management, detailed reporting and analytics, safety and compliance features, robust user management, and ensure mobile accessibility for convenience and accessibility...

03. Consistant exchange with pultrusion experts throughout the entire design process

This consistent exchange of insights and feedback ensures that the design is informed by their expertise, streamlines the process, and results in a more effective end product. It fosters a strong partnership, enhances innovation, and addresses the specific challenges and opportunities in pultrusion, ultimately leading to a technically sound and operationally effective design.

There are two main pain points to resolve during the creation of the platform

  1. To create a new essay, the form is extremely long and complicated. I proposed to Split the form into multiple sections, and add a vertical navigation bar fixed on the top to navigate between different sections easily.
  2. There are too many column in the essay table, so I used an horizontal scroll to browse all columns easily.
  3. To handle all the essay data automatically, I proposed to creat the features "CSV import".

04. Test U conducted to confirm the design solution

To confirme my design proposition, I have invited 6 users to test the prototype .

  1. Creat a new essai, find an existing essai with filters and edit it ;
  2. Creat a new machine configuration, find an existing configuration with filters and edit it ;
  3. Creat a new campaign by importing a CSV file ;

I have a good feedback in general expect some details to be improved.
